How to Shine When AI Is Added

When Your QA New Team Member Is AI

Bad news, good news:
  • The bad news is you have too much testing to do, and the company isn't hiring more testers right now.
  • The good news is that they are expecting AI to handle some of the basic testing responsibilities.
Is that good news? Or is it a threat to your career?

It's good news ... if you make the right moves:
  1. See this as an opportunity to take your next step up. If management is expecting AI to handle some of the basic testing responsibilities, that means management is also opening the door for you to move up in your skills and your career. Foundational skills have always been the point of entry for software testing, but they can no longer be the stopping point. You will be expected to know more areas, such as test automation, performance testing, and have test analyst or agile technical testing skills.

  2. AI can help, but you really need AI expertise to get the most out of it. Just because management expects AI to handle some of the basic testing doesn't really mean that it can do so, at least not well. You need to know how to use AI in testing, and you need to know how to test AI.
One thing is clear: You can't just conduct business as usual. If you don't develop more skills, AI can be a threat to your career. But if you develop new specialty and advanced testing knowledge, AI can be your launchpad to QA promotions and higher-level jobs.

ASTQB is making it easy for you to make the right moves. We've created short, easy-to-follow videos of the ISTQB AI Testing and the ISTQB Testing with Generative AI syllabus chapters. Each video is approximately 60 seconds long and gives you a feel for what the syllabus chapter covers. If you want to get ahead with test automation, ASTQB is also making that easier for you!
