New: 529 Funds Can Be Used for Certifications
Thanks to recent legislation, 529 plans were expanded to include credentialing, certification, and trade programs, not just traditional college expenses. This includes:
-
Tuition, fees, books, supplies, equipment
-
Required exam fees
One of the ways to be considered a qualified program under this provision is for the credentialing to be listed in the WEAMS database maintained by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, according to Saving for College. This new law came into effect on July 4, 2025.
If you take your exam through ASTQB and our ISTQB exam provider AT*SQA, this means that our ISTQB certifications for Foundation Level, Agile Testing, Test Manager (Test Management), Test Analyst, Test Automation Engineering, Technical Test Analyst, Security Testing, Performance Testing, and Model-Based Testing may qualify, with more coming soon. If you search the WEAMS database, choose the "country" search for "certifications," and enter "tester" (without the quotes) to see the listings yourself.
Check with your tax advisor for full compliance details, but be sure to take your ISTQB exam only through ASTQB and AT*SQA so you can qualify and receive extra free career benefits, such as a free micro-credential exam.
